About Studio801
Studio801 is a London based furniture design practice which explores the cultural influence of technology through furniture design. Its most recent work engages with this through the use of emergent technologies in furniture and by reflecting the new possibilities technology affords aesthetically, materially and in manufacture. This has led to a range of objects that explore the ways that technology can be used within design to create pieces that are a cultural intervention and provoke curiosity, consideration and a sense of playfulness. While this work focuses on the use of technology to drive the aesthetic, this narrative is explored with a particular sensitivity to the discipline of furniture design. This is influenced by an extensive knowledge of furniture's rich visual and cultural history and a deep understanding of the culture of use of furniture. This leads to objects that not only explore technological aspects, but that also speak of furniture in general and of themselves in particular. Other areas of interest that are explored in this work are the use of traditional and modern forms; sustainability through emotional durability and the shifting role of furniture, its function and the creation of narrative within designed objects.
